Polysubstance use

Polysubstance use is when multiple substances are taken together at the same time – or close in time – either intentionally or unintentionally. It can take many forms, including combining multiple stimulant drugs, combining depressant drugs, mixing stimulant and depressant drugs, and drinking alcohol while using other substances.

Polysubstance use can increase risks

This complex mixing of substances often increases risks and worsens health and social outcomes. For example, mixing prescription or counterfeit opioid pills with other substances such as another opioid, heroin, cocaine, xylazine, benzodiazepines, alcohol, and antidepressants has contributed to the rising number of opioid overdose deaths in the U.S.

Combining alcohol with prescription medications or illicit drugs can intensify the adverse effects of each substance, putting individuals at a greater risk of overdose, accidents, or long-term health issues.
